CANACONA: Despite having a spacious fish market in the Canacona municipality, fish vendors are forced to conduct their business sitting outside the premises, as the market has been taken over by herds of stray cattle.
Local resident Ramesh Dessai, a former teacher, said that stray cattle
rest at the market at night, and this deters both vendors and customers
from using the market premises. The cattle
also leave deposits of dung and track muck into the market.
The locals have complained that the vendors sell their fish by the
roadside at Rajbag, Pansule, Chaudi, Nagse, Palolem and Char Raste, which leads to a foul smell in the area.
The locals have also accused officials of spending taxpayers’ money on filling up municipality vehicles with fuel for personal use but not giving enough time and attention to the civic issues existing in the municipal area.
