The streets near the Housing Board have become infamous for the daylight chain snatching cases recently. In the latest case, a woman who was drying clothes was robbed by two men on a two-wheeler. The absence of streetlights troubled the entire area on Saturday and Sunday night.
“The darkness was so troublesome that we had to keep our lights in the house on at night to avoid untoward activities,” said Bhau Naik, a local.
The infamous Irani Gang, which has been operative for years in Margao, has allegedly been robbing and snatching chains in broad daylight at the Housing Board. Over six cases of attempts and successful chain-snatching have been reported from these areas.
When contacted, the Assistant Engineer of the area, Sawant, said, “The non-functional streetlights can be fallout of lightning during the torrential rains. The lightning results in breaking down of the timers of the lights and they fail to light up on time.”
“We have noticed the problem has happened in a wide area, including Chowgule College, the Housing Board, and Amrut Nagar. We have now asked one man to turn on and off the lights manually,” said Sawant, adding, “By next week, we will replace the timers. Today we have manually put on the lights.”
