Students face hardship due to traffic congestion at Valpoi

VALPOI: An excess of traffic in the central part of Valpoi is now causing hindrance to school students. The congestion in the town has only increased in the last decade and has provoked the locals and parents alike, to react sharply. They have demanded with local MLA Vishwajit Rane and Valpoi Municipal Council to look into the matter more seriously.

The monsoon has also added to the woes of students and their parents who get stuck in traffic jams when they come to pick up their children. Some have also drawn attention to non-Goan vendors, who have set up their businesses on the footpath leading students to find their way through the road and have accused the municipality of intentionally ignoring this. On Wednesday, the traffic was blocked for about an hour.

“If the situation is this bad today in areas like Valpoi, then what about tomorrow? The students after school are usually in a rush to get to home and this may result in severe accidents. The town needs to plan the traffic,” said Malini Gaonkar, one of the parents.

“The municipality needs to take stern action against the vendors blocking the footpath,” opined social worker Sunil Katkar.
