VASCO: A joint inspection of an abandoned laterite quarry at Cuelim-Cansaulim where a 16-year-old student drowned was held on Friday following cognisance taken by the Goa State Commission for Protection of Children Rights.
The joint inspection was carried out by Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim sarpanch Savio Pereira, Mormugao Mamlatdar Ranjeet Salgaonkar, Verna PI Melson Colaco, Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Peter Borges and others.

After the inspection, Borges said that the Commission had taken cognisance of the drowning of class XI student from Vasco in the quarry. He said that the he had inspected many abandoned quarries across the State which are posing danger to life. He said that minor students dying in quarries was a matter of concern especially during monsoon when they get filled with water.
Borges pointed out these abandoned quarries are not cordoned off, unmanned and no proper signages cautioning the visitors have been put up. He said that the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights had now suggested that orders be issued to the Water Resources Department (WRD) to survey these areas and ensure that the water is emptied from these quarries.
