Says engineers take bribes to allow illegalities

VASCO: In a decision that will bring trouble to tenants of municipal properties who have made changes to the properties in their possession, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Vice Chairperson Tara Kerkar has sought details of all council shops and flats occupied on rent.
Kerkar has also alleged that a majority of the municipal tenants, especially those occupying shops, have sublet their premises, and many have sold municipal shops.
“It appears that there is no fear in the minds of the people occupying municipal properties. A majority of them have sublet the same and have even sold our shops, while MMC who is the owner gets nothing. I have asked for a detailed report of our properties with complete information about the shops/flats at the time the property was leased out and its present condition. Then we will compare the data to find out whether the shop or flat has been altered,” Kerkar said.
According to information, MMC owns over 600 premises including shops and flats in prime areas in Vasco. Though the value of these properties is high municipal rent is lower than the market rate leading to vendors seeking municipal properties though they are in bad shape.
“All this is happening because our engineers have become corrupt. They take money and allow illegalities,” Kerkar alleged.
