Irate locals damage bus, block road

Tension flared up at Assagao when a 16-year-old girl was crushed to death by a speeding bus in the village at about 3.15 pm on Thursday.
Angry villagers damaged the bus and blocked the road for over two-and-half hours, after the police allegedly took the body in their possession without conducting the panchanama.
According to Anjuna Police, the mishap occurred when Suman Vishwa Karma and her parents were awaiting a bus to go to Mapusa for their visit to Bogdeshwar Temple.
“As they were waiting for the bus, a private bus (GA-01-Z-5640) proceeding from Mapusa towards Badem knocked her down while overtaking another bus and ran over her, killing her instantly,” informed police.
Irked with the incident, locals forced the over speeding bus to stop and pelted stones on the bus. The bus driver and conductor made good their escape and are reported to be absconding.
Anjuna Police rushed to the site and took the body into their possession without conducting the panchanama. This also irritated the locals, who blocked the road for over two and hour hours.
The locals complained that the Anjuna Police did not follow normal procedure in the accident case and demanded immediate action in the matter.
Anjuna PI Manjunath Dessai rushed to the site to pacify the agitated locals and assured prompt action against the culprit and suspension of the bus permit. PSI Videsh Pilgaonkar is investigating the case.
Assagao Sarpanch Pradip Naik and Siolim MLA Dayanand Mandrekar also rushed to the site and took stock of the situation.
