MARGAO: Chandor Cavorim gram sabha witnessed some tense moments as a villager became very aggressive and in fact began marching to Sarpanch Edward D’Silva threatening to assault him and villagers had to ask the lady to behave herself.
Tension erupted when the issue of public toilet for the market place was being discussed and the sarpanch said that the panchayat was opposed to having the toilets next to anybody’s house and further disclosed that he could not recommend erecting the toilets in another village.
It may be recalled that a committee set up the panchayat some years ago had suggested that the toilets be constructed across the road where toilets are already constructed for the school students.
However, he said that he had suggested that the toilets be erected in the open space at the beginning of the church owned building that is used for commercial purpose and this proposal was accepted by the gram sabha.
However, as the issue of the demolished toilets came up for discussion, the sarpanch disclosed that people objecting to the toilet had taken some slabs of the toilet and kept them in their property and did not allow the PWD officials to take them when they had come.
He said that ultimately he had to intervene and remove the slabs from the compound of the person and hand it over to the PWD officials. At this the owner of the property got agitated and threatened to hit the sarpanch and the villagers had to ask her to behave properly.
