MARGAO: Burglars broke into a jewellery shop in the heart of Margao on late Saturday night and escaped with gold and cash worth Rs 1.75 lakh.
According to the police, owner of the gold workshop, Nitesh Raikar has complained that cash of Rs 25,000 and one necklace worth Rs 1.5 lakh was stolen from the shop.
The incident came to light on Sunday morning and Margao police have registered a case under sections 454, 457, and 380 of the IPC.
The thieves tried to break open all the shops of the old Kesarkar Building situated at the entrance to the New Market but managed to get into only a few.
“The building houses a pathology lab, a dentist’s clinic and other shops. As the building is old, the rooms have wooden doors and simple grills on the outside. Being an old material, the thief easily broke the lock of the door, cut the grills, and entered”, police said.
As it is an old building, it has no security guards and no CCTV. Police are investigating the matter.
