PANJIM: The State government is in the process of setting up three more solid waste treatment plants, similar to the Saligao plant.
The plants would be set up in Bainguinim, Verna and Curchorem. Land at all three locations has been identified and the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) will be the nodal agency for setting up of the plants.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has asked all the municipalities to undertake segregation of waste at source as a principle.
In a meeting with the Chairpersons and Chief Officers of the municipal councils and the Mayor and the Commissioner of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), the Chief Minister discussed issues pertaining to solid waste management and invited suggestions for tackling garbage collection and disposal.
The Chief Minister asked the urban local bodies (ULB) to identify land in their jurisdiction to construct garbage collection bays similar to the ones currently constructed along the national highways for collection and segregation of the waste. The SWMC would operate these bays for the municipal bodies.
