PANJIM: In the wake of increasing cases of road accidents involving rent-a-car and rent-a-bike, the Department of Transport has upped its ante against those operating them and asked its officials to ensure that speed governors are installed in rent-a-cabs.
In an order, Transport Director P Pravimal Abhishek has asked all Assistant Directors of Transport (ADT) to carry out comprehensive inspections of transport vehicles, with particular attention to ‘rent-a-cab’ transport vehicles, to ensure that installation and functionality of speed governors are in compliance with the rule.

“Additionally, ADT must verify the presence and operation of speed governors during the renewal or issuance of fitness certificates for transport vehicles,” the order has said.
In the order, the Transport Director has asked the ADT to submit an action taken report on or before March 11, 2023, which will be reviewed on March 12, 2024.
“Non-compliance and shortfall in inspections shall be viewed seriously,” the order has said.
The Rule 118 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, mandates that every transport vehicle shall be equipped or fitted with speed governors having maximum pre-set speed for different categories as specified in that rule conforming to the Standard AIS 018/2001, as amended from time to time.
After the deadly accident at Mandovi Bridge last week involving a rent-a-car which claimed the life of a man from Aldona, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho had hinted at imposing curbs on the rent-a-car operators. Hew had said that all the rent-a-car operators should exercise caution while giving their vehicles to tourists.
