Incidentally, a complaint along with photos had been submitted to the authorities two days ago regarding the danger posed by the trees.
Ward Councillor Caitany Fernandes, who was present at the site till late evening, informed that the Talathi had inspected the site and estimated a loss of Rs 1.65 lakh. She said, “Their household items like furniture, utensils and food items were under the debris.”
The Curchorem Fire Station Officer (FSO) Dilip Gauns informed that they received 32 calls from Malkarnem, Amona, Bhatti-Sanguem, Zambaulim and Quepem in the evening after cyclonic winds uprooted trees and damaged houses and compound walls.
He said, “In Malkarnem, Sanguem around five houses were damaged, a compound wall had collapsed, and many electricity poles stopped functioning. It will take some time to restore everything as it is difficult to carry out work smoothly in the darkness.”
Meanwhile, a Curchorem resident escaped with minor injuries when his car (GA-09-A-8644) turned turtle at Cupramoddi-Assolda on Saturday.
According to Quepem police, the owner was travelling from Chandor to Curchorem. When he reached Assolda, strong winds made him lose control of his car, which then went off the road and turned turtle. Quepem police conducted a panchanama and took the damaged vehicle to the police station.
