MARGAO: Coming out openly against the proposed Mopa airport, the United Goans Democratic Party has complimented Environment Minister Alina Saldanha for coming out clear on her support for Dabolim airport.

“Alina has spoken the truth that Matanhy had never supported Mopa. If she remains with the truth, people of Goa will always support her,” UGDP Secretary General Anacleto Viegas said.

He told the media that Mopa airport is not at all required and urged Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar to put a maximum ceiling on tourist arrivals because of the pressure on existing infrastructure. “If 40 lakh people from outside will come into the State, we should be prepared for a sustained economy. We are only projecting the arrivals of tourists and not the requirements of tourists,” he said, while demanding special status for Goa.

He appealed to the chief minister to start the process of getting the Navy out of the State and ensure that Dabolim airport is used exclusively for civilian purposes.

Anacleto said though the people had voted for a change, everything remains the same at the ground level, claming that promises remain unfulfilled till date.
