VALPOI: The residents of Valpoi Assembly constituency have asked for postponing the by-election to the constituency scheduled on August 21.
In a memorandum submitted to the Returning Officer, Pravin H Parab, a group of voters have asked for postponing the election on ground that the same would severely inconvenience the Ganesh celebrations, in the constituency. Further, they said, the business establishments in Valpoi town would lose huge business, which they would otherwise get during the Ganesh festivities.
“We are requesting the State Election Commission to postpone the by-poll, because it will affect the people of Valpoi constituency, as most of the residents have their ancestral houses in other places of the State, and they all want to go to their native places for Ganesh festival,” said Vishwaraj Sawant, who is a signatory to the memorandum.
“The by-poll will also affect the traditional market of Ganesh festival in Valpoi constituency, so we are requesting the State Election Commission to postpone the by-election,” said Gaurish Gawas, another signatory.
When contacted, Returning Officer Parab said that he would forward the memorandum to the authorities concerned.
The other signatories to the memorandum are Dilkush Desai, Shanti Manerkar and others.
