Vendors allege sopo overcharging at Margao’s Gandhi Market

MARGAO: Vendors at Margao’s Gandhi Market have alleged that they are being overcharged for daily sopo, with collections allegedly going up to Rs 400 in-stead of the prescribed Rs 50, sparking demands for immediate intervention to curb the practice.

Former MLA Manohar ‘Babu’ Ajgaonkar, who is also a leader of the Gandhi Market traders, said shop owners have strongly condemned the alleged actions of the sopo collector and have complained of har assment, alleging that they are being forced to pay amounts far higher than the approved rate.

The issue comes close on the heels of recent complaints by Margao’s bread vendors over soporelated issues, which were also raised in the Goa Legislative Assembly. It is to be noted that the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) appoints the sopo contractor and also looks after the Gandhi market.
