VASCO: Residents Vidyanagar in Sancoale, under the banner of Vidyanagar Residents Welfare Association (VRWA), have threatened to block traffic on the four-lane NH17 B road if Sancoale Panchayat fails to demolish an illegal mobile tower erected atop a building at Vidyanagar by June 10.
According to VRWA President Edward Fernandes, residents had raised serious health concerns and had demanded that the panchayat not grant any NOC to erect a mobile tower in the residential area.
Taking cognizance of the same, Sancoale Panchayat body resolved to declare Vidyanagar residential area as ‘Mobile Tower Free Zone’, however a local builder had erected a mobile tower atop his building. “When we came to know about a builder erecting a mobile tower, we got united and forced the panchayat to issue stop notice to the builder as no permission had been given. To our surprise the mobile tower has been erected and has been covered with a Sintex water tank to fool the residents,” he said.
Fernandes added, “We now demand that the tower be demolished and action initiated against the builder. If the same is not demolished by June 10, then we will take to the streets and agitate on the four-lane junction (NH17-B) on Saturday paralyzing traffic flow.”
Taking serious note of this, Sancoale Sarpanch Ramakant Borkar on Tuesday met the residents and assured them that the panchayat would initiate action and an inspection has been fixed on Wednesday. “We too were surprised to see an illegal mobile tower which has been covered with a water tank. Action against the person involved will be taken and as assured we would maintain MES college residential area as ‘Mobile Tower Free Zone’,” Borkar said.
