Vijai accuses MMC of not taking responsibility

Directs Margao municipal body to hold emergency meeting on the fire issue

MARGAO: Dy CM Vijai Sardessai who rushed to Sonsoddo on Wednesday morning soon after his arrival from Israel last night, was quite upset with what had transpired and accused the MMC of not being responsible enough and merely seeking to shift the responsibility.
“Why do you want the Collector to order the enzyme? Doesn’t the council have enough money to purchase the enzyme?” he asked while directing the council to hold an emergency meeting to approve purchase of the enzyme.
Reacting to CO Siddhivinayak Naik’s claim that multiple agencies are involved in dealing with Sonsoddo, he said it was MMC’s primary responsibility and said the fire services were involved only because there was a fire.
He pointed out that his instructions to have the dump yard capped was not done as the council had preferred to write to some other agency to undertake that work and stressed that Sonsoddo has to be tackled on a war footing.
He said he would attend the meeting scheduled on  June 4 with Fomento Green to settle the issue between the two over Sonsoddo. “We shall try to nudge Fomento once again and if things do no move ahead then we shall have to look for somebody else,” he said. MMC Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudessai who was at the site on Tuesday night when the ensyme was sprayed, said that it was effective.
She lamented that some of the Collector’s staff gave him the wrong information that the enzyme was not effective because of which, additional quantity was not ordered.
While apologizing to the local people who have been suffering, Vijai said he sympathized with them and appealed to them to cooperate and bear with the authorities till the whole problem was brought under control. He added that the govt was duty bound to douse the fire and give people the much desired relief
