The road leading to Tivim in Bardez, also the Natonal Highway cutting through Goa connecting Karnataka and Maharashtra, has become a new garbage dumping area for people.
Locals allege that it is the residents of the new colonies and building societies at housing board who dumb their garbage along the road side as their garbage collection system is not proper. Locals also allege that the residents of these areas carry their household garbage when they leave their home for work and dump it alongside the road as they travel.
Local resident Salgaonkar said, “It is the people from the newly-formed colonies who throw garbage on the roadside as the panchayat does not collect it regularly. Also the people who take this route to reach their destination, throw away their garbage.”
Another local resident said, “We have seen many people stopping their vehicles and throwing bags full of garbage. This has become a new dumping zone. Besides the stench and dirt, this leads to dogs and cows in the areas that come in search of food and then remain here.”
However, Tivim Sarpanch Shivdas Kambli, denied that it could be garbage from these colonies that is being dumped on the roadside. “We collect dry garbage from the colonies of Housing Board Madel so the garbage dumped at the roadside is not from the colonies. Since it is a highway, it is the duty of the Pollution Control Board to take away the garbage but they do it after 15 days or more,” Kambli said.
He added, “Earlier, the pollution board had placed two garbage bins at the roadside but since they were not collecting it on a regular basis the panchayat had asked the pollution board to clean the garbage on a regular basis or else the panchayat will do so. After this they removed their garbage bins.”
