MARGAO: Substitute Sunny Fernandes’ 70th minute goal helped Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim overcome Dempo Sports Club 1-0 in GFA’s Goa Pro League (Super League) match, Cuncolim ground, on Friday.
Coach Severino Fernandes’ side had earlier defeated The Golden Eagles with an identical score line in the first leg, in September.
Cavelossim move to the second place in the standings with 18 points. Dempo are in the fifth spot with 14 points.
Cavelossim could have take the lead in the 10th minute when midfielder Alwyn Fernandes’ snap shot was well taken care by Dempo custodian Bruno Fernandes.
Dempo nearly broke the deadlock but Joy headed out off a flag-kick taken by Germanpreet Singh.
Dempo had umpteen look at the rival goal but their forwards were erratic after reaching the danger zone.
Cavelossim’s back four were often kept busy as Dempo attacks were well orchestrated by striker Uttam Rai who showed energy along with Myron Fernandes.
Dempo were denied in the 42nd minute as Uttam’s effort was saved at goalline by rival defender Neville Miranda after keeper ram was beaten.
Crossing over, the lone goal of the match came in the 70th minute when captain Mario Mascarenhas’ free-kick from the right hit the rival defender Fulgencio Cardozo and rebounded to substitute Sunny Fernandes pounced on the rebound.
