New Zealand cricket legend Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 16-year career that established him as one of the greatest players in the country’s history. The former captain represented New Zealand in 378 international matches, scoring 19,346 runs and registering 48 centuries across formats.
In an emotional statement, Williamson said the decision had been on his mind for some time. “I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time. I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand,” he said.

Williamson retires as New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in international cricket with 19,346 runs and also holds the record for most international centuries (48) and double centuries (6) for the Black Caps. In Tests, he amassed 9,515 runs and 33 centuries at an average of 54.06, while he also scored 7,256 ODI runs and 2,575 T20I runs. As Test captain, he led New Zealand in 40 matches, winning 22.

Interestingly, Williamson’s retirement has also fuelled speculation about his future in franchise cricket. According to reports, the former New Zealand skipper could be considered for a bigger role with Lucknow Super Giants after serving as the franchise’s strategic advisor in IPL 2026. With LSG enduring three disappointing seasons and questions surrounding head coach Justin Langer’s future, Williamson’s sudden retirement may have opened the door to a significant coaching or management role ahead of IPL 2027.
