The Black Caps have consistently performed at the highest level, reaching eight major ICC tournament finals. These include appearances in the 2015 Cricket World Cup and 2019 Cricket World Cup finals, as well as the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final which they won.
Their men’s team now stands on the verge of another historic milestone as they prepare to face the India national cricket team in the T20 World Cup final. Meanwhile, the country’s women’s side are already the reigning champions after winning the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Ahead of the final, New Zealand allrounder Glenn Phillips highlighted the striking contrast between the two cricketing nations. With India’s population exceeding 1.4 billion, Phillips pointed out the enormous depth of talent available to the hosts.
“Obviously we have a few less people in our country to choose from, which means our high-performance programs have to be very specific and tailored to the population we have,” Phillips said.
He went on to praise the quality of Indian players, adding that the depth of talent is extraordinary. “But the talent that comes out of India is phenomenal. They could probably pick three sides that would compete just as evenly in this World Cup,” he said.
Phillips also acknowledged the challenge posed by India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. “We had a really good trip against him in the bilateral series but he’s a class bowler,” Phillips said. “Bumrah has so many variations and hits the blockhole at the death incredibly well. But he’s human as well.”
