GOA VELHA: Navelim Villagers Union beat defending champions Anjuna Gymkhana 5-1 via the tie-breaker in the inaugural match of the London Trophy, played at Goa Velha ground, on Saturday.
In the 14th minute, Anjuna’s Samuel D’Souza sent in a ball to Rama Parsekar who controlled the ball, however the latter was unable to beat Shilton in the Navelim box. At the other end, Avlon Gomes shot a brilliant free-kick from the edge of the Anjuna box.
Goalkeeper Soma couldn’t hold the ball however, Mayran Gomes who had the opportunity to head the ball home sent the ball over the bar.
Post resumption, Navelim’s Prestley Gomes brought down Anjuna’s Nitest Salgaonkar inside the box as a result referee Melroy pointed to the spot. Rohan Kamble stepped up and shot it at the top net making it 1-0.
Navelim soon got their chance in the match as the referee awarded them a penalty kick as Prestely went down in the box after contact with the rival defence.
Avlon Gomes took the responsibility and sent the keeper in the other side to make it 1-1 in the 69th minute.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Avlon Gomes, Suraj Naik, Jaison Martins and Danstan Fernandes netted for the Navelim Villagers Union while Rohan Kamble, Dinesh Moraskar and Nitesh Salgaonkar scored for the Anjuna Gymkhana.
