MARGAO: A second half strike by Sanjay Korgaonkar helped Calangute Association overcome Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda 1-0 to advance into the quarter-finals of all-Goa Varca Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Varca Sports Club, at Varca ground, Monday.
There was no score at half time. The teams started the game on sedate note, Calangute Association slowly took control but their forwards could not break the deadlock due to inept shooting by their forwards.
Don Bosco Oratory did not have many open chances as they played defensive.
After the break, Calangute Association put up a better display and raided the rival goal time and again and their efforts bore the fruit in the 68th minute when Sanjay beat the rival goalkeeper with rasping drive.
Stung by that setback, Don Bosco Oratory regrouped quickly but their efforts were nullified by rival defender with neat tackles. Collin P of Calnagute Association was adjudged man-of-the-match.
