PANJIM: The proposed Mopa airport has found opposition from an unlikely quarter — the Samajwadi Party’s Goa Unit, which has said that another airport for Goa would be obsolete.
President of the state unit Rohidas Shirodkar said that the party was opposed to the setting up of a second airport.
“Goa being a very small state of 3714.59 square kilometer with a population of 15 lakh, it does not require an additional airport at Mopa,” Shirodkar said.
Shirodkar also took the opportunity to take a dig at Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar saying that the packages he is offering were making the state’s populace dependent on the government rather than become self sufficient.
He suggested that the government should instead support and encourage cottage industry.
“This would help people to produce and market their skills and products as well as provide financial support, in the wake of the mining ban,” Shirodkar said.
