CANACONA: Demonetisation seems to have initially hampered business in Canacona taluka, but things seem to be falling in place now.
Reacting on the eve of the anniversary of demonetization, Canacona taluka economy which is generally driven by tourism and agriculture was affected due to unavailability of change initially, which led to the drop in business among all types of traders and service-related businesses in the taluka.
When contacted, the president of Canacona Traders Association Diogo Da’Silva said many traders were still groping for change, as most customers come on the counter with Rs 2000 notes and banks in the taluka too were not very cooperative when it came to exchanging bigger value notes with smaller denominations.
Kavita Gaonkar, a housewife from the taluka said it’s been a year now and wherever we go in buses, hotels, grocery shops, pharmacies or for any other purchases, we are asked to tender exact change. However, slowly things are falling in place, but the absence of Rs 1000 note is felt badly.
Another entrepreneur from the taluka Anil Bhagat, however, disagreed with others saying slowly things were stabilizing.
with government issuing new currency and since India is a huge country it will take some more time for things to work out as planned by the central government, he said.
