Irate villagers damage bus as Candolim mishap injures two

Two persons were injured in a road accident near Lawande Supermarket, Anna Vaddo, Candolim, on Wednesday. Irate villagers of Candolim later damaged the bus involved in the accident.
According to Calangute Police, the accident occurred when the bus (GA-04-T-3148) was proceeding towards Calangute. While overtaking, the bus rammed into two Honda Activa scooters (GA-03-T-8403) and (GA-03-E-2640), which were proceeding towards Candolim.
One of the riders, Santosh Matkar (43) of Aradi-Candolim, sustained injuries and was rushed to GMC Hospital in Bambolim for medical treatment, while the other rider, Arthur Coutinho, escaped with bruises. Matkar was discharged after treatment.
Later, irate villagers of Candolim damaged the bus by pelting stones.
Traffic was blocked for over an hour due to the accident. The commotion prevailed at the site for quite long, while the bus driver made good his escape.
A Calangute Police team led by PI Nolasco Raposo, however, brought the situation under control.
Some buses remained off the roads during the latter part of the day, inconveniencing a number of commuters.
Meanwhile, Calangute Police arrested bus driver Tony Fernandes (35) of Badem-Assagao on charges of rash and negligent driving and for fleeing from the scene of the accident without informing the police or administering medical aid for the injured persons.
PI Raposo also informed that they have moved the RTO Mapusa for cancellation of the driver’s license and cancellation of permit of the bus plying along the Panjim-Calangute route via Anjuna-Chapora.
