SANGUEM: Jay Shirodkar, who was arrested by the Sanguem Police in connection with the murder of his uncle Shantaram Shirodkar, has confessed to have committed the heinous crime on December 23 afternoon.
Jay confessed to having committed the murder following a statement by his six-year-old son, who allegedly saw his father assaulting Shantaram with a ‘danda’ (wooden stick).
After recording the statements of Jay and his family, the police had failed to achieve any results but however with the help of an NGO the police managed to record the statement of Jay’s six-year-old son, who said that he saw his father assaulting Shantaram with a ‘danda’ (wooden stick).
Jay subsequently admitted to having committed the crime on account of property dispute among the family. The accused informed the police that on the fateful day he had gone to clean his portion of cashew plantation and as the fire reportedly spread to the portion of the plantation owned by the deceased Shantaram Shirodkar, there was verbal altercation between them which ultimately led to the Jay mercilessly assaulting his uncle Shantaram.
Jay informed the police that during the scuffle, Shantaram fell into a ditch and died. Later Jay went home and returned to the site with a gallon filled with diesel and poured the same over the Shantaram’s body and set it on fire.
Around 10 pm the same day, Jay reportedly went back to the crime site which is around 25-30 metres away from his residence to confirm if the body had burnt completely.
It may be recalled that 80-year-old Shantaram Shirodkar, a resident of Kuinamoll Sanguem had been reported missing from December 24 and a missing complaint was filed at the Sanguem Police Station by his nephew Mahableshwar Shirodkar. On the same day, Mahableshwar who went searching for his uncle Shantaram noticed a charred body in the cashew plantation.
