PANJIM: The three-member committee appointed by HC visited Goa Meat Complex at Usgao-Ponda on Tuesday to look into allegations levelled by the NGO.
According to information, the three-member committee comprising Prasanna Acharya, Director of Animal Husbandry Dr B Braganza and Adv Manik Thali visited the complex.
Sources informed that members went through files and registers from the meat complex office. However, none of the committee members entertained queries from reporters on the issue, stating that a report would be submitted to the court within the stipulated time.
Porvorim correspondent adds: With business coming to a standstill, meat traders are now mulling over the possibility of importing beef from neighbouring states to meet the demand from hoteliers and people.
Kureshi Meat Traders Association of Goa President Anwar Ismail Bepari has stated that their business activities had come to a grinding halt following the High Court directive based on a petition filed by the Govansh Raksha Abhiyan (Goa).
“Since our business activities have come to a standstill, we are unable to fulfil the commitment made to hoteliers. We had also taken orders for weddings and other functions, which we are unable to execute. Our association has already met Deputy CM Francis D’Souza and we have apprised him of the situation,” said Bepari.
Blaming the NGO for harassing the meat traders, Bepari said: “Lakhs of animals are being slaughtered in the country daily and beef is being exported.”
“If the NGO is interested in the welfare of the animals, it should try to stop beef exports and should provide shelter to stray cattle in the Goshala,” charged Bepari.
