MARGAO: As the day to constitute the new panchayat body is at the doorstep, the 33 village panchayats of Salcete Taluka witnessed a final and the last move on Sunday pertaining to get the majority in finalising the names for the most important posts of sarpanch and deputy sarpanch.
As per the information received from the reliable sources, many newly elected panchas have already decided whom to push forward for the post of sarpanch and deputy sarpanch in their respective panchayats, but few are yet to get the support of the required panchas to get the majority.

Basilio Fernandes is all set to become new sarpanch of Camurlim Village Panchayat for one more time, and Rain Dias will take charge as deputy sarpanch, which is reserved for the lady.
However, the newly elected panchas of neighbouring Raia Village Panchayat are yet to disclose the name of sarpanch and deputy sarpanch. But Anthony Barbosa, a local leader, who had claimed six to seven members from his panel won the elections said that he got the majority. There are likely possibilities that former sarpanch Minguelina D’Souza will get yet another opportunity to rule the panchayat.
“The name of the new sarpanch and deputy sarpanch will be disclosed on Monday,” he stated.
As informed by reliable sources, the opposition group is also trying hard to get the majority.
There are similar situations in the Navelim, Sao Jose De Areal and Chinchinim Village Panchayats. There are hectic efforts to get the majority in order to rule the panchayat.
Chinchinim is facing a tough time, as seven newly elected panchas are new faces and only two managed to get re-elected in the recently held panchayat elections. Few panchas of the other panchayats in Salcete have not yet claimed the majority and hence all eyes on the day i.e August 22, who will be the new sarpanch and deputy sarpanch.
Four times panch Seema Shankre is all set to take the charge of the Seraulim Village Panchayat, as she enjoys the majority. Similarly, village panchayats of Colva, Velim, Nuvem etc have already finalised the names of sarpanch and deputy sarpanch. As per the information Freda D’Sa, wife of former Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa is most likely to be the sarpanch of Nuvem Village Panchayat.
Speaking to Herald, Custodio Fernandes, resident of Navelim informed that they are waiting for a new panchayat body with a vision for the village for the next five years.
“Whoever may take the charge of sarpanch or deputy sarpanch, we want them to have concern for the village and more especially plans to resolve the long pending issues,” he stated. Another local Pravesh Naik also said that the new panchayat must continue with the hectic work for the betterment of the village and must hear the voice of villagers before taking any decisions.
