Digging works hit phone, internet services in Margao

MARGAO: BSNL landline and internet connectivity has been severely affected by digging works in Margao and adjoining areas.

According to BSNL officials, they receive two or three complaints every week regarding underground cables being cut during the digging works. Several police complaints have been filed against those responsible, but there is no end to the menace. The cables provide internet and phone services to households and commercial establishments.
“Nobody is informing us about who is working where, and in that bargain, the cables are cut. No authority coordinates, and the failure to communicate, has troubled us and the consumers a lot,” said a BSNL official.
He also stated that they have been filing police complaints over the matter for several months and that the agencies in charge of the digging works had failed to informed them about the works, which has hit connectivity badly.
Meanwhile, Colva Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCF) has threatened to file a complaint in the consumer court for the losses and inconvenience caused by the digging works.
CCCF member Judith Almeida stated that she had complained about disconnections several times, but the problem persists.
“The internet and landline got disconnected thrice in the last few days. I, along with so many others in the locality, have been troubled by the failed connectivity for a year now and the problem doesn’t seem to stop.”
She added, “The roads are dug 365 days and are causing several accidents. The matter is very serious and it calls for the panchayats to supervise the operations in their jurisdictions.”
