MARGAO: The fishing boat and trawler owners of the State on Wednesday met the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) chairman Wilfred D’Sa and requested him to give prominence to local fishermen in the wholesale fish market.

The fishermen have sought for some relief with regards to charges in getting their vehicles to the wholesale fish market.
Harshad Dhond of the Goan Boat Owners’ Association said, “This is the only and the largest wholesale fish market in Goa which was built for Goans. We have requested the SGPDA to give us prominence in the trade conducted at the market”.
Dhond requested the government to charge the fishermen a reasonable price with regards to testing at the jetty so that they can get back their workforce and start the fishing business soon. He said following two consecutive bad fishing seasons, the government needs to extend some help to the local fishermen to save the business from running into losses.
South Goa Planning and Development Authoritychairman Wilfred D’Sa said their demand for having the market open between 3 am and 8 am only for the Goan traders and from 8 am onwards for the traders will be discussed during the authority’s meeting and added that their request for the land allocation inside the market will also be discussed.
