The old issue of parking in the heritage-cum-residential area of Campal once again came to the fore after tyres of two buses said to be belonging to a film shooting group went up in flames in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Campal resident Marco Sequeira Fernandes woke up after hearing a sound early in the morning. On coming out Sequeira saw the bus tyre in flames. Soon, he saw, a tyre of another bus parked close by burning.
The cause of the fire remains a mystery, even as the residents once again raked up the issue calling the attention of the authorities to take note. Tuesday afternoon the most area on the most beautiful stretch of the D B Marg resembled a parking area. Many heavy trucks and buses were seen parked.
Resident and social activist Patricia Pinto said they have been informing the Corporation of the City of Panjim, Collector and Goa police about the problem, but the matter still remains unsolved.
She said, “Parking of buses of these film shooting crews was one issue, but the other problem was the people alighting from these vehicles come and dirty the place by throwing rubbish and using the place as an open urinal.” We have seen some tourists using the parking areas for cooking, she added.
Residents have once again demanded parking in the area for vehicles film shooting crews and tourists should be completely banned as Campal was a heritage area.
Campal Residents Association President Derek Rebello has also raised the matter with the authorities. CCP has meanwhile ordered an inquiry into the whole incident.
