MARGAO: In an interesting development, the newly-elected office bearers of NSUI, the student wing of Congress, on Wednesday rallied behind Youth Congress President Valanka Alemao for the Congress ticket, even as Valanka said she would not shy away from contesting the ensuing polls if nominated by the high command.
Soon after his election on Wednesday noon, NSUI President Gitesh Naik told the media that Congress student and youth workers will go all out to demand that the party high command allot the South Goa ticket to Valanka Alemao. “We will all work to ensure that Valanka is given the party ticket in South Goa”, Naik said to loud cheers from NSUI members outside the South Goa district office on Wednesday evening.
When the media questioned Valanka, who was seen outside the Congress office, over the NSUI demand in favour of her candidature, she said “that is the demand made by the NSUI members”.
But when questioned further over her stand on the NSUI demand, she said, “If given the responsibility, I will have to contest. The NSUI members enjoy freedom of speech. I do not know what the high command will decide. But one thing is certain that we will all go by the high command decision to ensure that the Congress wins the seat”. Replying to another question, Valanka said it was high time the Congress party infuses new blood into the organisation.
