Accuse company of harassing workers

VASCO: About 300 contract labourers of a company courted arrest on Monday, after accusing the company of harassing the workers.
According to reports, the contract labourers assembled near the company gates and shouted slogans against the company and the contractor marched towards the police outpost and courted arrest. To avoid any law and order situation, South Goa Additional Collector/Sub Divisional Magistrate Surendra Naik, along with a strong police force from South Goa and two IRB battalions were stationed within the vicinity of the company.
As the protestors reached near the police outpost at Zuari Nagar, they courted arrest and the agitators were shifted to Verna Police station and later released.
When contacted, union leader Pratap Mardolkar said following government’s intervention, the workers and the company officials convened a meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and most of the problems were solved.
“However, when the workers resumed duty, they were harassed by the company with overload and did not allow the workers to work overtime. The company even refused to pay the arrears to those who wanted to take VRS, which forced us to go on strike again,” stated Mardolkar.
“We will court arrest again on Wednesday and this time, we will not sign any bond for our release,” said Mardolkar.
