PANJIM: Urging State government to initiate action against those involved in the mining scam, Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho on Tuesday called for steps to recover the Rs 35,000 crore revenue lost by the State due to massive illegal mining over decades.
The Dabolim MLA also raised concerns whether mining operations would resume even during the forthcoming mining season. “The way things are currently going I don’t feel mining will start in the coming two seasons,” he added.
Godinho was speaking during the congratulatory motion on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar receiving the Indian of the year award 2012 in the politics category.
Godinho said that efforts need to be made to recover at least 50 per cent of the loot from all those involved in illegal mining. “It is not possible to recover entire Rs 35,000 crore but at least 50 per cent can be recovered and the same can be used for the development of State,” he added.
“It is sad to say that the people, who were given keys of State treasury turned out to be its predators. The people who looted the State treasury need to be held responsible,” he said.
Earlier, supporting the motion Nuvem MLA Francisco Pacheco also demanded that government should recover Rs 35,000 crore, as identified by the Justice Shah Commission. Pacheco said “investigation needs to be conducted to expose all those involved in the mining scam”.
