PANJIM: The State government on Thursday has appointed two police officers attached to the Old Goa police station – PI Sudesh Velip and PSI Vijay Kavlekar – to tackle complaints of dumping of debris in Merces.
A Division Bench of the High Court of Bombay at Goa comprising Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Prithviraj Chavan has directed Old Goa Police to submit a report on the illegal land filling along the Ribandar-Merces road and adjourned the hearing to July 16. The court is hearing a contempt petition filed by Adv Aires Rodrigues over inaction of the authorities to the continued dumping of debris and garbage along the Panjim-Old Goa bypass road.
The HC also directed Merces panchayat to produce particulars of all complaints made in the last two years to the Police over illegal dumping of debris and garbage in the fields.
Rodrigues had filed the contempt petition pointing out that in 2007 a Public Interest Litigation was filed over dumping of building debris along the Panjim-Old Goa bypass road and various orders came to be passed by the High Court in that petition which was disposed on June 26, 2008 based on a Minutes of Order that was signed and submitted to the Court.
