PANJIM: Goa figured in the list of World Heritage sites of the country declared by UNESCO, which was shared by the Minister of State of Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, on Monday.

The reply said that augmentation of sites on the World Heritage List is a continuous process and that sites are selected on the basis of their potential for fulfilling criteria under Operational Guidelines and demonstration of Outstanding Universal Value.
“Churches and Convents of Goa (1986)” was in that list of 38 World Heritage Sites in India.
Incidentally, the reply also stated that “Churches and Convents of Goa (1986)”, which is under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), “are conserved as per ASI’s conservation policy and are in good shape”. It may be recalled that there was considerable furore across the State over the dilapidated condition of the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa. The role of ASI in letting this UNESCO World Heritage Site reach such a state had been criticised by many including conservation experts.
