VASCO: Two persons died when their scooter rammed an illegally parked truck on four lane NH17 B road at Shantinagar in Vasco early on Tuesday. According to Vasco police, the scooterist and his pillion, Shyam Sabar, 21, and Daud Sabar, 19, respectively, were relatives and hailed from Orissa.
“The accident occurred around 5.30 am when Shyam and Daud were Vasco-bound. However, when they reached near Ekta Engineering on NH17 B, their vehicle rammed a truck that was illegally parked on the highway. The impact was such that both of them died on-the-spot” police said.
Shyam worked as a labourer with a Dabolim-based builder and recently Daud had come down to Goa in search of a job. However, Daud had decided to return and on Tuesday, Shyam had gone to drop Daud at Vasco railway station,” the police said.
Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and further investigation is in progress. Police is also likely to book the truck driver under MV Act as he had parked his truck illegally on the highway.
Meanwhile, soon after the accident, aggrieved Vasco locals gathered at the site and demanded action against unauthorised parking of heavy vehicles on the National Highway stretch.
“Even in the past, motorists have died when their vehicles rammed parked vehicles on the NH-17 B stretch. Today’s incident is second such one reported at same site.
Every day, hundreds of airport taxis besides other vehicles ply though this NH17 B road and despite heavy rush, truck drivers park their heavy vehicles on the highway. “Due to this unauthorized parking of heavy vehicles along the four-lane highway from Shantinagar to Varunapuri Mangor-Hill junction, this stretch has become a death trap and something needs to be done on a priority basis to make this road commuter-friendly,” said Deepak Tejam, resident from Shantinagar Vasco.
MMC Councillor Krishna alias Daji Salkar who reached the site after the accident said, “It is very sad that two innocent youths today lost their lives in the accident which took place mainly due to unauthorized parking of heavy vehicles along the highways in Shantinagar area. In order to make the four-lane highway accident-free, the Vasco traffic cell and Vasco RTO officials should gear up to initiate strict action against such illegal parking of heavy vehicles otherwise accidents would continue to take place,” he said.
