PORVORIM, JUNE 8
The State government has decided to acquire Mapusa Communidade’s land, admeasuring 8,538 sq mtrs, near Mapusa police station for the construction of a Mini Kala Bhavan.
The State government has invoked Section 6 of Land Acquisition Act 1894 to state that the land is required for construction of Mini Kala Bhavan.
The government has also appointed Deputy Collector and SDO Mapusa to perform the functions of the Collector, North Goa District, Panjim, for all the proceedings herein after to be taken in respect of the land and has directed him under Section 7 of the Act to take order for acquisition of the land.
The mini Kala Bhavan will be constructed by the Directorate of Art and Culture. It may be recalled that the issue of Mini Kala Bhavan was hanging in the balance since the last one year.
After the government published notification under Section 4 of Land Acquisition Act 1894 in the Official Gazette and local newspapers in June 2009 stating the land was required for the purpose of Mini Kale Haven, some farmers raised objection to the land acquisition.
The Mapusa Communidade had informed the Deputy Collector that they sold around 2,300 sq mtrs of land to a private party. The Deputy Collector on hearing the farmers and Mapusa Communidade submitted a detailed report to the government.
However on the basis of the report, the government issued notification under Section 6 of the Act on June 4, 2010, and directed the Deputy Collector to go ahead with the process of land acquisition.
Meanwhile, Kala Bavan Nirmiti Samiti, Mapusa, President Narayan Karekar has thanked the government for taking the decision to acquire the land for construction of Mini Kala Bhavan at Mapusa.
“Some politicians were interested in building commercial complex in the land and shift the Ravindra Bhavan near St Xavier College stating that Kala Bhavan at the site would create traffic congestion in the town and power problem,” stated Karekar.
“The government has taken the right decision and has fulfilled the wishes of the people. The site is best suited for Kala Bhavan, as it is close to the bus stand and police station,” said Karekar.
