MARGAO: The South Goa Assistant District and Sessions Judge Vincent D’Silva on Friday sentenced accused Siddanth Kashyap, resident of Baina and a native of Uttar Pradesh to undergo seven years simple imprisonment for committing robbery.
The accused was also directed to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 and in default to undergo one year simple imprisonment.
Earlier, Adv Rajiv Gomes for accused Kashyap had filed application stating that the accused was below 18 years and was a juvenile on the date of commission of the alleged offence. Judge D’Silva, however, rejected the application.
The accused was held guilty of committing a robbery at gun knife point by robbery a women of her jewellery at Chicalim on March 30, 2010. The accused had entered the house on the pretext of asking the woman for her husband’s mobile number when the woman occupant was preparing breakfast. Further the accused on the pretext of seeking drinking water entered kitchen and at knife point robbed some jewelry from her. However, as the woman later resisted to the accused demand to part with all valuables Kashyap shot her on the neck with revolver in front of her children and walked away leaving the victim bleeding. The then DySP Mahesh Gaonkar interrogated the accused who confessed committing the crime. Public prosecutor Asha Arsekar appeared on behalf of state and the court examined 21 witnesses including the investigating officer PI Braz Menezes.
