PONDA: The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) on Tuesday resolved to clear all the four alleged illegal scrapyards operating in its jurisdiction.

Stating that the resolution was taken at the council’s ordinary meeting, PMC chairperson Anand Naik said that henceforth Rs 2,849 will be levied as house tax on the new flats.
Chief Officer Yogiraj Gosavi said that the scrapyards operating without permission would be cleared following a month’s notice to the owners. The PMC will also issue notices to recover tax arrears to the tune of Rs 64 lakh from eight shop owners which have been pending for the past eight years and failure to do so will result in the sealing of these shops, the chief officer warned.
The municipality further resolved that shops and business establishments would be allowed to display only one sign board in front of their premises. Besides, PMC will also levy professional taxes on doctors, engineers, lawyers and tutors under the Municipal Act.
The municipality said that those contractors who fail to conduct development works in the municipal jurisdiction would be blacklisted.
It was also decided to tackle the stray dog menace in the town under the supervision of municipal staff and councillors.
The PMC also resolved to demolish old fish market sheds to pave way for the construction of the new fish market by shifting fish vendors to the market complex basement.
