MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council workers yet again came to remove the vendors sitting near the Police station selling vegetables. However, this time the people and nearby traders along with some NGOs asked them to go away and not trouble Goan vendors. The MMC workers had to leave after the advice.
Bystanders and some people said that it is really hurting to see the bad treatment being meted out to Goenkar vendors. NGO representative Laurel Abranches said, “The language these workers were using was filthy. The action of MMC is contrary to Goem, Goemkar and Goemkarponn.”
The NGO also informed of having seen poor Goan fisherwomen standing next to Salcete Farmacia and the road next to Pimpalkata with small basket of fish in their hand being driven away while just yards away there are migrants doing full-fledged businesses of various types by keeping their items on the road thereby obstructing the pedestrians.
Problem had erupted at Margao after the tribal women selling vegetables near the police station and other places were asked to go away by the inspectors and vacate the place.
The Goan women selling vegetable have pleaded with the MMC not to end their business abruptly. The MMC has said that they are in the process of finding an alternate land for them and would soon shift them there.
