MARGAO: Declaring that the Saturday courts will continue, Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte asked the South Goa Advocates’ Association to substantiate its allegation of corruption by revenue officers and promised to take action against such officials.
At a meeting with the association members on Monday, he said the charge of corruption is very serious and that it has come from a respectable association. He assured prompt action against the guilty provided the association gives him something concrete against the concerned persons.
Stating that an officer from Sanguem has been suspended, he said the government is committed to give good governance and assistance to the people and that is why various reforms have been implemented.
While the government is willing to work on Saturday, he expressed surprise as the advocates did not want to take up matters on Saturday and argued that the special courts could be discontinued when over 10,000 pending cases have been reduced.
Pointing out to the various problems faced by them in the revenue courts, the advocates cited various cases as to how revenue officers used different yardsticks. Some even issued notices to dead person for succession deeds, they claimed. The minister informed that training for officers will be undertaken shortly. He assured the advocates to look into the complaints against the Canacona Mamlatdar, who most advocates claimed to be incompetent.
“He used to not work as a talathi in Margao and yet he got promoted as a mamlatdar,” lamented Adv Radharao Gracias.
