VASCO: After Herald reported that raw sewage from the nearby Sulabh toilet at Baina is being released directly into the beach, the Mormugao Municipal Council swung into action and sorted out the issue within 24 hours.
According to MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik, immediately after Herald reported the news, he along with municipal engineers inspected the site and sought explanations from the Sulabh toilet operators on their act.
“We were shocked to note that sewage from Sulabh toilet located on the beach was being released on the beach and thus when we inquired from the Sulabh officials, we were told by Sulabh toilet staff Brijesh Singh that the problem started some two weeks ago after the project contractor for four lane National Highway 17 B ruptured the sewage pipeline connected to Sulabh toilet,” he said.
Naik said, “Since the issue was serious, we immediately issued directions to Sulabh officials to repair damaged portion of the pipeline and stop any further use of the toilet until the work gets completed. The work has started and by evening, the work would be completed and the issue would be resolved.”
Naik also informed that the municipality would take steps to clean up the sewage that has been released on the beach.
Meanwhile, the MMC chairperson telephonically informed Herald, later in the evening, that the issue has been completely resolved and now toilet facility is open for the public.
