A self-proclaimed godman was apprehended in the Cuttack district of Odisha for allegedly sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl, according to police reports on Monday.
The incident occurred in the Kendupatna area while the girl was on her way to a nearby shop to purchase some items, as stated by authorities. The accused, a 50-year-old man, lured her to a nearby mutt where he sexually assaulted her.
A case has been filed under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at the Nandankanan police station, police confirmed. The suspect was promptly arrested, they added.
This marks the second arrest of a godman in Bhubaneswar on charges of rape within a week. On October 11, a 78-year-old godman and his 56-year-old accomplice were taken into custody for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl at their ashram in 2022.
In an unrelated incident, a man is accused of killing an individual who attempted to rape his 10-year-old daughter, police reported on Monday.
This incident took place in the Dhenkanal district of Odisha on Sunday when the girl accompanied her father to bathe in a canal, according to police.
After they completed their bathing near their village in the Parjang police station area, the girl moved a short distance away to relieve herself.
A 27-year-old man reportedly attacked her. Upon hearing her screams, her father struck the assailant with a rock, resulting in his immediate death. He subsequently surrendered to the police station, authorities stated.
