Cloudflare, a company that usually works quietly behind the scenes to keep vast sections of the internet running smoothly, suddenly found itself in the spotlight on Tuesday after a major outage disrupted access to several of the world’s most widely used platforms. The incident affected services such as X (formerly Twitter), Canva, ChatGPT, Perplexity and others, highlighting the critical yet often unseen role Cloudflare plays in ensuring the internet functions seamlessly.

The disruption left thousands of X users in India and abroad unable to access the platform, with similar problems reported across multiple websites. While X has not released an official statement, Cloudflare confirmed it was dealing with a large-scale technical problem affecting numerous customers. In its initial update, the company said it was “aware of, and investigating an issue which impacts multiple customers: Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API also failing”.
Cloudflare later reported signs of recovery, though it cautioned that users could continue to experience “higher-than-normal error rates” as it worked to fully resolve the issue.

Cloudflare describes itself on its official website as “one of the world’s largest networks,” supporting “millions of internet properties”. Its services enable businesses, non-profits, creators and anyone with an online presence to run faster, more secure websites and applications.
At a basic level, Cloudflare helps sites manage heavy traffic, defend against cyberattacks and maintain quick load times. But this also means that when a major infrastructure provider like Cloudflare goes down, multiple platforms can fail simultaneously — as witnessed on Tuesday.
