OLD GOA: Twenty-six students of a school in Old Goa took ill after consuming midday meals on Saturday. The students were discharged after receiving first aid and Old Goa Police has filed a case against a self-help group.
According to police reports, 12 students from Std 6 and 14 students from Std 7 at Old Goa Educational Institute, Ella, complained of uneasiness and abdominal pain after eating Patal Bhaji and the matter was brought to the attention of the headmaster, Sanjeev Sawant.
He then sampled the Bhaji and found it to be bitter in taste.
The headmaster alerted the Corlim Primary Health Centre and a team of doctors rushed to the school and administered First Aid to the ailing students. Twenty-one students were discharged and five students were shifted to the GMC hospital for treatment, but were later discharged from the hospital.
The headmaster then filed a police complaint against the self-help group which had supplied the mid-day meals.
Acting on the complaint, officials of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) went to the school and collected samples of the Patal Bhaji and bread for tests.
Old Goa Police has registered the offence under Sections 272, 337 IPC 87 (F) of Goa Public Health Amendment Act 2005, Sections 50, 51, 59 of Food Safety Standard Act 2006 against the Self Help Group.
According to information, the school has about 400 students from Std 5 to SSC.
