OLD GOA: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials installed three CCTV cameras outside the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa.
It may be recalled that though CCTV cameras were installed inside the Church by the Church authorities, officials of the Basilica of Bom Jesus had been requesting the ASI officials to install CCTV cameras outside the Church.
Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa has always been considered as an important spiritual pilgrimage centre for Catholics and other faiths, and as a well-frequented archaeological and historical site, which draws thousands of visitors everyday especially for a visit to the Basilica of Bom Jesus where the relics of St Francis Xavier are kept for worship.
Speaking to Herald, Rector of Basilica of Bom Jesus Fr Savio Barreto said the ASI officials finally installed three CCTV cameras outside the church a few days back.
“But I did not allow the ASI officials to install cameras inside the Church, as we have already installed over 20 CCTV cameras. Since I am not sure who will monitor these equipments, I told the ASI officials not to install any cameras inside the Church,” said Fr Barreto.
Asked who will monitor the CCTV cameras installed outside the Church, Fr Barreto said he has already written to the ASI asking who will monitor the cameras installed outside and inside.
“If ASI wants to monitor cameras installed outside the Church, I have no problem, but inside the Church, I am doubtful as the Church is a prayer house which could affect the sanctity,” he said.
