PONDA: Ponda Police on Monday arrested around nine environmentalists including some Usgao villagers for opposing laying of 900 mm dia water pipeline through Dhatwada-Usgao nullah.
It may be recalled that few months ago, the Department of Water Resources has started laying of major 900 mm dia water pipeline through Usgao nullah to supply water from Usgao Ganjem Bandhara to OPA Water Treatment Plant to meet the summer water requirement of Tiswadi and Ponda residents.
However, the Usgao locals opposed to the filling and laying of pipeline through nullah claiming that digging depth of around two metres in nullah for laying pipeline would not only destroy the natural springs but several trees will be felled for the project.
The agitating villagers were demanding to lay the pipeline from the bank of nullah. Following this, the work was halted and was even pending during lockdown period.
However, two days ago, as the WRD began its pending work, the Villagers managed to stop the work following which WRD Officials filed a complaint for obstructing the work on government approved project.
Following the complaint, the police arrested the environmentalists including villagers protesting at the site under various Section of IPC.
