MARGAO:  The Aquem Ground Bachao Association has decided to intensify its agitation against the Margao Municipal decision to renew construction for a housing project on the Costa ground.
While making a fervent appeal to the government to make available the necessary funds to the Margao Municipal Council to acquire the land, the Association has called for a public meeting on Sunday at 4.30 pm, opposite the T B Cunha school Aquem, to impress upon the people of Aquem and Margao in particular and the people of Goa in general of the urgency to foil all efforts to convert the Costa ground into a mega construction site.
“Even since the Margao Municipal Council renewed the license which is in a state of expiry, the ire and angst of the people has found expression through a broad based committee that is deciding the future course of action,” informed Adv Jawahar Dias.
Briefing the media, Dias accused the Councillors for acting against the wishes of the people of Aquem by renewing the construction license.
“They took shelter of a case deciding vis-a-vis the Nasik Municipal body and instilled fear amongst the Councillors that they would be personally liable if the builder seeks damages,” he said.
MMC Councillor Avinash Shirodkar said that people of Aquem are opposed to a housing project, while Councillor Damu Shirodkar said the people of Aquem will fight till the last to retain Costa grounds for the recreational needs of Aquemkars.
Activist Joan Rebello clarified that the people of Aquem are not asking the ground free of cost, but are only demanding that the government acquire the ground for the local populace.
