A dramatic contest is underway in West Bengal’s crucial Bhabanipur seat, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regaining the lead after three rounds of counting. She is currently ahead by a slim margin, reversing early trends that had put BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in front.
The counting process, which began at 8 am, has already witnessed multiple swings. Adhikari initially surged ahead in early rounds, but Banerjee soon overtook him. The margin continues to fluctuate, reflecting the closely fought nature of the contest. With more than 17 rounds still to be counted, the race remains wide open.

Officials confirmed that postal ballots are being counted first, followed by EVM votes. The Election Commission of India has deployed heavy security across counting centres, particularly in Kolkata, to ensure a smooth and transparent process.
Tensions were visible even before counting began, with reports of clashes between party workers outside counting centres. Banerjee had earlier raised concerns over alleged irregularities near strongrooms, urging her cadre to stay alert. However, officials rejected these claims, stating that EVMs are secure and under round-the-clock surveillance.
Bhabanipur, a traditional stronghold of Banerjee, has become a high-profile battleground this election, especially after her 2021 defeat to Adhikari in Nandigram.
